The Shildon Exhibition for the Stockton & Darlington-150 celebrations in August-1975.
In the month of August-1975 a superb Exhibition was laid on in the then active Shildon Wagon-Works to mark the 150th year of the formation of the iconic S&D.These pictures (scanned Ektachrome and Kodachrome 25 slides with much work due to being sadly degraded) depict the locomotives on display there prior to be Cavalcade that took place the following weekend on the 31st of August 1975......
The set that started it all! 252001 set number with 43000 stands in the yard at Shildon during the 150 Stockton&Darlington Celebrations held that year.Fittingly this was the final exhibit (Number 34) as at this time was the very latest in Passenger technology. The Power-Car at the other end 43001 (41002) was scrapped in 1990 whilst this one 43000 (41001) ended up in the National Collection. ..28 august 1975..
Ex-Lancashire&Yorkshire 'Pug' 51218 sits in the sunshine at Shildon. The last time I saw this engine previously was when it was parked down the side of Bristol Barrow Road Shed in the early 60's.I believe it was officially allocated there at the time.I well remember 'cabbing' it and thinking how small it was compared to all the other engines that were surrounding it!

'Clan Line' 35028 stands gleaming in the superb sunlight in the yard at Shildon.Note how all the moving parts of the motion are labelled to give visitors an idea what each component was for.Amazing that just 8 years previously this engine was still hauling expresses out of Waterloo on the Southern Mainline. Now 37 years later in 2012 this well looked after piece of Bullied machinery is still working the rails in Southern England ..28 august 1975.. See HERE for all the history and news on this locomotive.
0-8-0 NER class T2 number 2238 was up until withdrawal in 1967 numbered 63395 and classified as 'Q6'.Another engine that worked right up to the end of steam in this country in 1968. Now fully restored to pre-grouping style stands in the display area at Shildon during the Exibition there.

Originally built in 1872. Number-72 'Fenchurch' for the LB&SC-Rly was already 103 years old when on display here at Shildon.Shown here in the livery of one of the later owners 'The Folkstone Harbour Company' in its final form as an 'A1X'.Now in 2012 as a 140 years old! the engine runs as 672 in unrebuilt 'A1' form with dummy condensing apparatus and a shortened smokebox.

Ivatt 2-6-2T 41241 sits gleaming at Shildon Wagon Works having a break from operating the 'Shildon-Shuttle' up the line towards Darlington. This Loco was bought out of service and never suffered the indignity of being dumped for scrap like so many other now preserved engines.Built in crewe in 1949 as a BR engine so has always been numbered 41241 it lasted just 18 years before going into preservation in full working order. In 2012 it still remains a valued member of the Keighley&Worth Valley Railway's fleet of working engines. ..28 august 1975..
841 or 30841 as it was in BR days sits freshly restored from Barry-Island scrap condition. This immaculate Southern 4-6-0 S15 class was carrying the new name 'Greene King', a tribute to the East Anglian Brewery that contributed to the cost of the restoration. See HERE for a shot of her in the scraplines at Barry in 1968.It actually left there in September-1972 so the restoration was completed amazingly in less than 3 years!

92220 'Evening Star' at this time still only 15 years old but already a museum piece stands in the sun alongside 75029 at Shildon in the superb sunshine that marked this week of the exhibition there.

Ex-Caledonian 0-4-4T 419 ran on BR as 55189 up until the early 60's.Engine is now the Emblem of the SRPS at the Bo'ness&Kinneil Railway.I actually saw this loco stored at Eastfield Works -Glasgow in 1964 whilst on a week long shed-bash.Now in 2012 it still steams regularly on that railway on the banks of the Firth of Forth in Scotland.

This is the replica 'Locomotion' built in 1973-4 by Locomotion Enterprises at Springwell specially for this event and has been at Beamish ever since.Unlike the original which at this time in 1975 was still plinth mounted at Darlington's ECML Station this one was actually in steam as can be seen from the faint exhaust fumes exiting from the tall chimney.

This engine has certainly had a varied career.Originally a WD engine but was absorbed into LMS stock in 1940 as 8233. However the Army requisitioned it in 1941 and it was sent to Persia (Iran) where it became 41-109.After the war it returned back to the UK in 1954 and went to the Longmoor Military Railway as 500.In 1957 it became BR 48773 and lasted to the end of steam being finally withdrawn in August 1968.Seen in the main shed at Shildon.

London-Transport's bo-bo DC electric 3rd/4th rail, Number 12 'Sarah Siddons' was one of a class of 20 locomotives used from their introduction in 1922 until withdrawal in 1962 on trains out of Baker Street-London.Now kept as a working engine and even now in 2012 still makes occasional runs on the LT network.Another member of the class Number 5 'John Hampden' is in the LT Museum at Covent-Garden. Number 12 is seen inside the main shed at Shilden.

Patrick Stirling 4-2-2 No-1 for the GNR stands inside the main shed area at Shildon Wagon Works during the display that organised during the whole week before the famous Cavalcade that took place on the 31st August.Normally this engine is housed at York as is had been since before WW2.Originally built in 1870 and preserved since 1907.

990 'Henry Oakley' a Class C1 Small Boilered Atlantic designed by H A Ivatt and built in 1898.Upon withdrawal was retained by the LNER and went to the York Museum. Here it is seen inside the Shildon Shops during the S&D Celebrations.

A H Peppercorn designed 2005 is a K1 2-6-0 and it stands under cover at Shildon during the Exhibition there prior to the Cavalcade on the coming weekend.2005 or rather 62005 was never actually an LNER engine as it was introduced into service in June 1949,some time after the formation of British Railways.Nowadays in the second decade of the 21st century (37 years later) this loco performs regularly in the North of Scotland on railtours from Fort William.

Parked up down the side of the main exhibition shed was 7808 'Cookham Manor' in unlined GWR-Green.Interestingly this is the only member of the class preserved (9 in total) that did not come from Barry Scrapyard being bought directly out of service in 1965,just 10 years before this show.
..28 august 1975..
Modified Hall Class 6960 'Raveningham Hall' was an early departure from Woodham's yard at Barry. The Loco only spending eight years at the seaside from July 1964 until it left in October 1972.Restoration was also a fast-track job as barely 33 months later it made its debut as a fully restored engine actually being used as seen here on the Shildon-Shuttles.The paint used was really a little bit on the light side for GWR green but still a superb effort to have it working for these celebrations.

41241 stands ready to propel yet another shuttle the mile or so towards Darlington giving some of the many visitors to the Shildon Works a taste of steam. In the distance can be seen the original HST-set 252001 with 41001 leading. ..28 august 1975..
Wearing the ficticious livery of the 'Keighley & Worth Valley Railway' Ivatt 2-6-2T is seen working the Shildon-Shuttle in top-n-tail mode with an out of sight 6960.Here it is seen departing Shildon on yet another run up the line towards Darlington. This engine actually steamed into preservation from its last shed at Skipton and remains at Keighley to this day.
